More Church Sex Scandals

Another big church pastor bites the dust, more sexual impurity, more defenses by the church flock of their own moral failings: Willow Creek Chicago pastor resigns, admits to ‘sexual impurity’

Let’s stick to the basic reality, here: Big religion is probably the easiest way for hucksters to make a fast buck off of gullible people. Therefore, it attracts amoral people. That’s the simple bottom line. Especially in big churches, you’re going to get semi-criminals who are interested only in fleecing the flock and are willing to pretend to care about Jesus in order to do it.

You’d be much better off just ASSUMING that your pastor is a cheesy used car salesman interested only in separating you from your money rather than thinking he’s a spokesperson for God.

As a scam, big religion works flawlessly, unfailingly. I confess, even I am tempted sometimes; it’s such easy money and since I know how the scam works I could be a millionaire preacher right now. Only my own personal values restrain me. But I digress…

Church people rush to the defense of the pastor!

“Pastor Wu is like all of us, a sinner. He, too, can find forgiveness for his sin, just like King David of the Old Testament did. Pastor Wu knows the way, and he was very courageous and should be commended for confessing his sin.”

No, that’s where you make a liar out of yourself. I know! You claim to have BEEN sinners, who have been transformed by Christ. You use this alleged transformation to claim the authority to sit in judgment of others. That’s a fact and you know it.

Pick a side: if you claim to different than the rest of us because of your religiosity, if you claim some magical transformation, then you need to prove it by actually being better people.
If you are going to turn around and excuse acting this way by now saying you’re no different than all the rest of us, then get the hell off your moral high-horse and stop judging others!

If this were some atheist-godless-liberal instead of a church pastor you’d be saying, “See, that proves that those people hate America and family values. They need Jesus. That would make it so this stuff wouldn’t happen.”

And you know that you’d do that, so stop lying to yourself and others about it. That, my friends, is the hypocrisy of religion.

Dreams Visions Beliefs

I find dreams to be entertaining but some people see them as messages from some supernatural realm. American are high on the dream/vision list – but that should come as no surprise since we’ve already seen that the average American already has more in common with  Iran than any other first world country.

So to many Americans, dreams are  full of meaning …even though, in typical schizophrenic fashion, they know they can’t rely on them as predictors of future events: Most People Believe Dreams Are Meaningful

“In other words, people attribute meaning to dreams when it corresponds with their pre-existing beliefs and desires … people who believe in God were likely to consider any dream in which God spoke to them to be meaningful; agnostics, however, considered dreams in which God spoke to be more meaningful when God commanded them to take a pleasant vacation than when God commanded them to engage in self-sacrifice. …Most people understand that dreams are unlikely to predict the future but that doesn’t prevent them from finding meaning in their dreams, whether their contents are mundane or bizarre.”

It’s like classical Christianity, then: God is in charge…except when he isn’t. He gets credit for anything good that happens but the bad stuff has to be put on something/someone else – free will, Satan, anything.

This is part of how we get the idea that dreams somehow predict things: When we dream of dramatic things that don’t happen (99 percent of the time), we forget about the dream. On the rare occasion when we dream about some weird event that later takes place (the time frame doesn’t matter much) we think, ‘OH, I had a dream about that! I must have been predicting it!‘ …Except…not.

Evangelical Church Covers up Sex With Kids

The ongoing saga of hypocrites on parade continues, with New Life church now implicated in a cover-up of child molestation by its staff. Mainstream media has aided the church, of course, keeping it under wraps because we can’t hurt those sensitive Christians’ feelings by revealing their hypocrisy. The Gist: More New Life Church Revelations

“New Life Church had suppressed from the media an earlier case of a pastor at the church who was convicted of sexual assault against a child under the age of 15 and got off easy with help from the church, only to later have his probation revoked. The convicted pastor then illegally left the country, he said, and he speculates that New Life Church may have helped him do so.”

Ah yes, the true family values of evangelical Christians – finally starting to get out there for the world to see: Cover up child sexual abuse…if you get caught, threaten the media to keep it out of the public eye…use your position as “spiritual leaders” to get your pastor off with an unprecedented easy sentence.. then spirit him out of the country to avoid the law.

Read this and remember it next time some hypocrite wants to lecture you about morality and family values. Because their values ought to make you wanna puke.

Would You Buy A Used Car From This Man

The used car business is known as a gathering place for crooks and liars so why not have Jesus help you clean up your image? Yep, just back from appearing on a creamcheese danish, the J-man is now hawking used cars in Florida: Image at Dade City car dealership is Jesus, some say.

Now as regular readers know, I have often mused on the plight of poor Jesus. After all, we keep him so busy performing low-rent miracles like appearing on toast and driveway stains, it’s no wonder he doesn’t have time to save the 25,000 children who starve to death every day. And yet people like me give him crap for that. The J-ster has to have his priorities, you know!

So get used to the starving kids and all the other suffering in the world; God has his calender filled up with dubious “appearances” all over the world.

And by the way, it’s no better for God’s mom! She doesn’t have time for dying babies, sick moms, suffering teens or anything like that- she’s got yet another “appearance” to do – and she’s booked  solid: ‘Miracle’ in ice? Virgin Mary seen in Plymouth ice formation.

Scoff if you must but it’s no stupider than some of the things you believe in (in all probability).

Biological Religion

From our friends at The Daily Mail, we have another article on the biology of belief. This is same conclusion I reached some 20 years ago and I’m delighted to see that science is now catching up. Brains ‘are hardwired to believe in God and imaginary friends’

“The evidence includes studies of babies and children which have shown the brain is programmed to think of the mind as being separate from the body.

“This distinction allows us to believe in the supernatural, to conjure up imaginary friends – and to conceive of gods, this week’s New Scientist reports.”

It should come as no surprise that there is a biological cause for religion: everything we do comes from our biology. I know this bothers some people, particularly militant atheists. I think, however, that these curmudgeon atheists are probably victims of the same brain-mind dichotomy that infects and deludes believers since they prefer to believe in reason as if it were derived from some force separate from the collection of chemicals that defines us.

Weekend ‘Morons in Intellectual Masks’ Edition

The folks over at AlterNet have decided to have an intellectual discussion about Why Do People Believe in God?. Oh, wait …you missed my air quotes around “intellectual” didn’t you? An example of the masquerade …

Atheists claim (as I am doing here and as Richard Dawkins did in the title of his book) that God is a delusion.

A delusion is, pretty much by definition, dysfunctional.

Then it goes on to say how atheists aren’t happier than religious people and they don’t breed more, therefore religious beliefs can’t be delusional. …Eh? It’s hard to know if this writer is extremely stupid, or if he is merely trying to construct a straw man for the purpose of knocking atheism. I suspect it is the latter.

Delusion – an erroneous belief that is held in the face of evidence to the contrary (Princeton)
– A fixed false belief and is used in everyday language to describe a belief that is either false, fanciful or derived from deception. (Wikipedia)

Dysfunctional – impaired in function; especially of a bodily system or organ (Princeton)

Okay, game over. The Alternet article starts out from page 1 by being false, misleading and deceptive. We do not know if this is by design or through ignorance but it certainly makes this article a waste of time.

And if you think THAT bit of equivocation is idiotic, wait until you read the comments. Better yet, don’t bother. It’s like talking to toddlers.

Ignorance is rampant. In England a Hospital calls in exorcist after ghost spotted … One shudders to think what sort of medical service these people offer! Leeches and potions?

Meanwhile, in BC schoolteachers are being directed to a Scientology front group called Youth For Human Rights International. I’m sure B.C. kids need Scientology’s help … perhaps next year the school will be offering classes in necromancy.

The world just keeps getting stupider and stupider.

Human Sacrifice, Man Charged

Human sacrifice, coming soon to a neighborhood near you. Crazy? Sure, and also inevitable. Evangelical leaders push human sacrifice… Charges filed in man’s attempted ‘sacrifice’

“According to police, Oumar Lam’s 26-year-old girlfriend arrived at their Queen Anne apartment Sunday to find him lying naked on a couch near a candle-lit altar. The woman told police she was seated on a bed when Lam attacked her from behind, pulling a pillowcase over her head and attempting to suffocate her.”

Oh sure, Pat Robertson, James Dobson and others will screech and whine, but I’ve already shown conclusively that their extremist evangelical doctrines WILL lead to human sacrifice cults. It’s only a matter of time.

The question is, what are we going to do about it?

Christianity Kills Kids. Really. And They A Proud of It.

There is a trial going on in Oregon because some religious parents killed their baby. They killed their baby by refusing medical care that would have saved it… because their church believes only in prayer. But they are hardly alone.

Here we discuss yet another case – an 11 year old girl who died of diabetes. In America? You bet. And it wasn’t because we’re the only industrialized nation that doesn’t have universal health care, either. Nope. This is, once again, a case of Christianity killing kids in the name of God. Article: One a Month

“Eleven-year-old Kara Neumann died of diabetic ketoacidosis on Easter Sunday, 2008. Like the man in whose name her parents killed her, she died agonizingly slowly, over the course of a few days, due to dehydration and shock. Unlike what her parents believe to be true of the man in whose name they killed her, she did not come back.”

You’d THINK, perhaps, that principled Christians would decry this clearly wrong-headed use of faith. You’d think that the cries of “what about the children?” would echo in the courtroom.

You’d think that, but you’d be wrong. No, the fundamentalist evangelicals are openly insisting that killing children is a protected right of religion. They are trying to pass laws that would prevent anyone from ever being prosecuted for killing their children, as long as they can say that they did it because God told them to.

Yeah, that religion stuff… it sure is great, isn’t it? Here we have religion that is nothing more nor less than child abuse. Oh and for what it’s worth, there is an organization dedicated to fighting against religion-based child abuse, called CHILD. You might want to check into it.

Man Changes Into Goat To Escape From Police

According to the newspaper article, two guys try to steel a p.o.s Mazda and when vigilantes tried to stop them, one runs away while the other guy changes into a goat. It’s in the news so it must be true: Newspaper claims suspect transformed into a goat

“The paper quoted police spokesman Tunde Mohammed as saying that while one suspect escaped, the other transformed into a goat as he was about to be apprehended.”

Yeah, sure, it’s in Nigeria – but do you really think that the uneducated folk of – say, Mississippi (see previous story) – are any less likely to believe in magic or witches? You don’t get around much, do you?
